Melissa Diamantidi AW 2012

Melissa Diamantidi AW 2012

Stumbling upon a designers’ latest collection whether it landed in your inbox as Melissa Diamantidi‘s new Autumn Winter 2012 collection indeed did, or randomly finding it online brings sensations of suspense, intrigue and excitement – my heart skips a beat and there’s no shame in admitting that.  In fact that’s exactly what happened when I flicked through the lookbook – elaborate elegant drapery and tailoring met gowns and party dresses worthy of the likes of Blair Wardorf and Serena Van De Woodsen of the Upper East Side.  Seeing these designs on my laptop screen only made me wish I could touch and feel these pieces in person – there is a primal desire to be in contact with such designs so elegant and sophisticated.

A Parsons graduate, trained under Roland Mouret now based in London, Melissa Diamantidi is definitely one to watch. Inspired by the Scottish architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the AW2012 collection evolves around the combination of flowing, natural forms with more tailored and geometric shapes. The collection itself was inspired by the study of ice formations and crystal growth – where un-tampered, natural forms of snowflakes exaggerate structural qualities when viewed under the microscope where there is a powerful disassociation with such fragility.

The incredible panel detailing resonate a three dimensional quality as conveyed through this amazing leather jacket, the collection itself explores angles and asymmetry to represent the moment and growth of snowflake formations.  This jacket is to die for! Definitely lusting after this bad boy!

The use of rich soft textures such as printed silks, jerseys and wools juxtaposed with tough leather and mesh like panelling detailing creates a nice balance between such contrasting materials. I particularly love the cute yet sophisticated print skirt and blouse combo and of course the amazing leather panelled floor length gown – to quote Rachel Zoe “I DIE!”

Sending love and congratulations to Ms Melissa Diamantidi for an elegant, sophisticated, cohesive collection for the modern woman – you’re making me lust and crave after so many key pieces! You’ve made a new Aussie fan girl!
